First day of the new tax year – 2016/17

Time to gather detailed documents for your 2015/16 tax return, if you’re self-employed or have income from property in the year ended 5 April 2016.

31 May 2016

Copies of 2015/16 P60 documents issued to employees.

6 July 2016

Copies of 2015/16 P11d documents issued to employees.

31 July 2016

Deadline for second self assessed payment for tax year ending 5 April 2016.

If 2015/16 is the first year you’re submitting a tax return, this doesn’t apply to you.
If you’ve already sent in a tax return, then dependent on your tax positon for the previous tax year (2014/15) then you may required to pay a second payment on account (the first one was payable by 31 January 2016). If you are required to make payments on account they count towards your total tax due for the 2015/16 tax.

5 October 2016

Normal deadline to register with the HMRC if you became self-employed or started receiving income from property. You should submit a form CWF1 for self-employment or form SA1 for non-self-employed income to HMRC.

31 October 2016

Deadline for paper submissions of self-assessment tax returns for the tax year ended 5 April 2016. Paper tax returns need to be in by this date or you could be fined, but you still have until 31 January 2017 to file online.

30 December 2016

Send your online self assessment return by 30 December 2016 if you want HMRC to collect your 2015/16 tax liability (up to £3,000) via future years PAYE tax code, this is intended to spread the liability over a 12 month period.

31 January 2017

Deadline for online submission of 2015/16 self-assessment tax returns to HMRC

31 January 2017

Deadline to pay the tax you owe on self-assessment ‘balancing payments’ for tax year ended 5 April 2016.

31 January 2017

Deadline for the first self-assessment payment on account for year ended 5 April 2017.

1 February 2017

Automatic £100 fine imposed if the HMRC issued you with 2015/16 tax return before 1 November 2016 but it not yet submitted to HMRC. Interest will start accrue on any unpaid tax for the 2015/16 Tax year which is still outstanding as at 31 January 2017.

5 April 2016

Last day of the 2015/2016 tax year.

5 April 2016

Deadline for claiming your PAYE tax refund for the 2011/12 tax year.

5 April 2016

Deadline for claiming tax overpaid for the 2011/12 tax year under Self Assessment

6 April 2016

HMRC (HM Revenue and Customs) issue self-assessment returns and notices for tax returns to be submitted for the years up to 5 April 2016.
